Dee Anna Hiett
Associate Professor of Dance
DeeAnna Hiett is originally from Texas. She began her training at the Dance Factory under the direction of Pamela Erwin. She has danced with Ailey II, Ballet Hysell, The Jamison Project, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Wylliams/Henry Danse Theater, Deeply Rooted Productions, Quixotic, and performed as a special guest artist with several companies including the Kansas City Ballet. Ms. Hiett has participated in various commercial works such as videos with LL cool J and Cameo, American Express industrials, an Issey Miyake fashion show and Hanes Her Way. She has performed in the productions of "Carmen" and "The Merry Widow" with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Ms. Hiett has taught and choreographed for numerous universities and studios including Princeton, the University of Michigan, the University of California Berkeley, Ichibungi in Tokyo, Steps and Ailey Camp.
Associate Professor of Modern Dance
Gary Abbott began dancing in his hometown Atlanta, Georgia with Barbara Sullivan’s Atlanta Dance Theater. He attended California Institute of the Arts and later danced with several dance companies including Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble where he was mentored by Ms. Robinson. There Abbott began honing his skills as a choreographer while having the opportunity to work closely with choreographic luminaries such as Donald McKayle, Katherine Dunham, Talley Beatty, Donald Byrd, Kevin Iega Jeff, and others.
Abbott and Kevin Iega Jeff, along with Linda Spriggs, Diane Shober, and LaVerne Alaphaire Jeff founded the Deeply Rooted Dance Theater (DRDT) in 1995. In addition to maintaining his position as an artistic director with DRDT, Abbott serves as Associate Professor of Dance at The University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance in Kansas City, MO.
Abbott has taught dance workshops worldwide and has been a guest instructor /choreographer at Spelman College, Iliev Dance Foundation in Sofia, Bulgaria, the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in Durban, South Africa, Conservatory of Music in Tianjin, China and in Shenzhen, China.
Abbott has choreographed for many dance companies including, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Theater, Dallas Black Dance Theater, David Taylor Dance Theater and of course Deeply Rooted Dance Theater in Chicago, IL.
KC Contemporary Dance
Katie started her training under the guidance of Barbara Craig and Jennifer Medina in St. Louis, Missouri. Katie continued her training on scholarship at the University of Missouri- Kansas City where she performed in numerous shows, both locally and nationally. She graduated from UMKC in 2009 with a dual emphasis in ballet and modern. Through out her career, Katie has performed with several companies including; The Slaughter Project, Wylliams Henry Contemporary Dance, Quixotic, and Kansas City Contemporary (formerly Kacico Dance). In addition to performing, Katie also teaches dance locally and choreographs for several organizations, companies, and studios. Her choreography has won several awards and has been show cased in many concerts in the Kansas and Missouri area. Katie is currently a dancer, a choreographer, and Rehearsal Director for KC Contemporary Dance.
